This short video shows users how to use John the Ripper to crack MD5 hashes. John the ripper supports hash cracking for many hash types, including MD5 as in this tutorial. There aren't nearly as many good John The Ripper tutorials out there as there are for other security tools such as Ettercap, Cain & Abel, and others. John the Ripper supports many different hash types: SHA, MD5, NT/LM, etc. It is also extremely fast in cracking in comparison to other GUI apps due to its lower overhead.John the Ripper also supports dictionary attacks, you can feed the program a list of possible passwords to try. It iterates through the wordlist hashing each word it comes across, then it compares it to the hash you provided to crack. If they are the same, the attack was successful.
